Speedball Pen Holders are intended for use with Speedball Pen Nibs. To use the Pen Holder, first insert the corresponding Pen Nib into the tip of the Pen Holder. Dip the Pen Nib into your ink bottle just enough to fill the reservoir (which is the grooved-underside of the nib). Tap/wipe the underside of the nib on the rim of the bottle to remove excess ink (like with nailpolish!)

Your Nib can be cleaned easily immediately after use by wiping clean with a dry paper towel. You can also use the Pen Cleaner available on our website.

The less weight you put into your stroke, the better. Pressing too firmly on the nib will allow a heavy flow of ink--resulting in pools of ink or very wide lines. You will find the pen works best when you barely press but rather wisp the tip accross your paper.

Also available on our website is a Speedball tutorial book with basic techniques & alphabets. You can also choose your favorite font on your computer, print out an alphabet of upper & lowercase letters and practice by tracing on a light box. Another easy way to achieve hand-written calligraphy is to actually print out your guests' addresses on paper and use a light box to trace the addresses directly onto your envelopes. (practice first!)
